Chronicles of Tyria’s Fifth Anniversary Contest

Jalinar's Twelve Grentches of Wintersday Contest!

This year, Chronicles of Tyria is celebrating its fifth anniversary of existence within the Guild Wars 2 community. It all started in 2012 before the release of the game with the story of Naveen, and our team has been growing ever since.

From Alucardalina’s distant past to Kaede’s undercover mission for the Order of Whispers, our adventurers have been fighting the Inquest, dealing with their forgotten past as a Heartless and tried to protect an ancient artifact. Elder Dragons have pushed some out of their homelands, while others have been avoiding dealing with their past.

Our seven writers have been sharing their stories and adventures in Tyria with you for several years, and now its time for you to share how creative you can be with us.

In collaboration with Arenanet, we were given a ton of GW2 gear to share with you guys to celebrate this milestone.

How to enter the contest

**Due to shipping costs, physical prizes are only available to participants in North America and Europe. However, international participants can enter a secondary raffle to win some gem codes also provided by Arenanet**

  3. Submit your entry by using the comment section below. Your comment should include a link to your screenshot (imgur, flickr, tweet, tumblr*), your written entry and your desired T-shirt size.
  4. The comment section will close on May 18th at midnight EDT.

Tarir has been my favourite location since i first entered it, and has been arenanets biggest accomplishment yet in my opinion. The even chain is fun and there are plenty of shinies to be found!

This is one of my favourite screenshots because it captured a moment that made me laugh. Me and my sister were having trouble getting the vista in the picture and it took a couple of tries. After finally getting it we stood there for a while taking screenshots, proud of our achievement… Then a player came by and got it right on the first try. You can see them in the picture quickly flying away.

If I win, M or S size t-shirt would be good.

Ebonhawke is my favourite location in the game; with its majestic Hawkgates guarding the entrance, and its significance as last bastion of defense from the old Human-Charr war; now united to fight the Elder Dragons. There is not too much going on there, but the city’s layout with circular roads, especially when seen at night, has always got me feeling really good. As such; it’s also the birth place of my main character in Guild Wars 2; Ser Waymar Royce, a gritty Ascalonian northerner with a past in the Ebon Vanguard ranks. The picture is taken gliding over the city from the cliff overlooking Ebonhawke (where the vista is).

I took several shots of the Grove because of just how beautiful the city is. However, in the end I just couldn’t decide which screenshot to share because they were all amazing. Then I remembered the special “secret” section in the Grove. Everyone knows about this place now, but it was such a find when the game first came out it. A few of my guildmates have used this spot as an RP marriage ground, and I always think of Cantha when I am here. Maybe because this is one of the only spots in the game with bamboo?

The place is a WvW stronghold. It has lava rivers that plunge into the ground, really high walls and even astonishing gargoyles . When I go there, I feel like im protected. The stronghold is quite big and it has great distances between the walls and the lord, so the hole place is hard to invade and so I always feel safe there. I usually stay inside it, creating my crazy invasion stories on my mind until enemies really invade it and kill me, but I always have fun!

It was the first day I ran around in Ember Bay. I saw a photograph opportunity with this earth elemental and decided to go for it. By the time I switch to my photo setup, it was already dark. The sun flare was gone.
I decided to come back at dawn and exited the game to save the spot. I told couple of my friends, and do a small live stream and recording of me explaining how I take GW2 photos, from the DSR and ReShade settings to post-processing.
This is the photo I’ve got at the end of the stream.

  4. First of all I want to say thanks for making this contest! <3

The screenshot may not be the most beautiful, however it means a lot to me.
I took it months ago when I was very very sad and tried to make a screenshot that "shows" how I was feeling.
I also wanted to show a puppy because I really love all kind of animals, so they usually make me go happier.

T-shirt size: I'm not sure as it's not always the same but I don't know, maybe M.

    Good luck everyone!!

Lion’s Arch been through a lot. That also includes dreams of my first guild and my brother’s plans to set up meetings spot in the boat bar with the popular round table. Years pass since then and both – my guild, as well as the free city of Lion’s Arch – died to be reborn again in a new flesh.

Ironically: only behind my character is the past, where I can never come back, but in front of her I see the future. Through prism of change, my eyes are looking at what will come next. I imagine following chapters of not just former capital of Kryta, but of the whole Tyria and everyone, who ever walked on those lands, as Lion’s Arch reminds me of the heart of the game… and the hearts of players that it has.

    May we meet again.

This place is where for me the whole Guild Wars universe begin. The begin place of my first character of GW2. Every time I pass here with him I think back at the time when I just joined the game and didn’t know what to do and laugh at my self how dumb I sounded back then. With other words my begin point of the game is the most treasured memory for me.

When Guild Wars 2 first opened all those years ago my guild and I spent almost 12 hours just exploring all the new areas. Our guild is very small and we consist of 3 different time zones so getting a group together is a real challenge. When we came across Garenhoff and above it the Wizards Tower we were all amazed at how cool this was. We wondered if we were able to get to the tower in the sky or if its going to be added in expansions to come. This area holds a special place in my Guild Wars heart.

  5. It’s a tough choice, I am a huge scarlet fan so was doing to do Scarlet themed screenie, but I decided to let another awesome lady have this limelight.

This is the place (I hope i got it right) where Eir died. it was tragic that day, Eir was a fierce and strong ally with Wisdom enough to have once lead Divinity’s Edge, but she was just ripped away from us, she didn’t even get a chance to fight back.

Norn is my favorite race and I feel her death was not Honorable to Norn Standards.

Eir Died when HoT was released, so I mark her death as 26th October, a bit like I marked the death of scarlet as 4th March, but late last year we got to give her a proper send off!

In the words of Eir “May the Spirits of the Wild watch over you.”

Nothing would fit better than the end of this guild mission, back in the early days when you finished your first legendary weapon and try to get a look around that sweet Frostfang you crafted some days ago. The end of the cave looks very unique fitting one of the very first styles of my necromancer almost perfect.

    Screenshot :

This Place in Tyria is full of memories. Kneel’d lot of times in front of the Grenth statue to get into the Underworld. Got into adventures with old friends. Lot of rages and happiness. Hours and hours of fun. I was a kid/Teenager in that time. All that in Tyria 250 years ago.

Now? this place is underwater .. lost his majestic appearance. Can not kneel in front of Grenth to get into the Underworld. The old friends arent here. Cannot get the same happiness or rages again. No fun here.

I’m older now and this Place in Tyria reflecting my Feelings.

I’m older now and the fun times in Tyria are not the same anymore. The reallife don’t let me to have fun here like a teenager 10 years ago.

at the end: i have to apologize for my english skills .. Long time since i’ve typed something in english 😛

the Shirt size is M or L .. depends on how much i’ve eaten that day 😛

I’m especially fond of this screenshot because I remember curiously exploring the new areas in HoT and coming across this view. It was honestly breathtaking and I felt like it was a prize for exploring.

Whenever I look at this screenshot I’m reminded of how beautiful the game can be.

  6. “Lets take a selfie” – after a Raid Run with Guildies

This pic shows that friendship is the real META of Tyria, without them I would not accomplish these feats! Thank you, my guildies!

  7. When I think about a special place in guild wars 2 I usually get to think about Xera’s platforms. For two reasons.
One, when I got into the twisted castle for the first time my mind was blown away and I understood how powerfull our mesmers could become if they went under bloodstone. Which… let’s admit is something we all wanted to do.
Two, when I finally made my way up to Xera, when she was standing there to taunt us I was ready to defeat her and… as you may have experienced yourself it took me hundred of attempts. And still after that much time, this fight is still so beautiful to me and so special. I mean illusionary platforms in the sky !
Okay one extra reason : This fight includes so many fun angry nights with my team mates. “How does it feel to make it so far only to fail ?”

So here is my face to face with death.

  8. This was one of the last times that everyone was still together. Eir and Trahearne were both still alive. Zojja was still healthy and fighting by our side. We had just killed our First Elder Dragon and proved to the world that it could be done.

I miss Eir and Trahearne. Yea, I know, he could be a little annoying but he was still our friend and he had our back. I was stunned when I lost Eir. I couldn’t believe she was gone. I am glad that Logan is back and healing well but I am still worried about Zojja.

I look back at this moment and remember when we were all still together and I miss it, and them.

The Shiverpeaks! I was on a linguistic expedition in the Ural Mountains 2 years ago and sometimes all I could think of was the Shiverpeaks. After I came back I grew to love those maps twice as much, since I had real life experience how hard but beautiful life can be in the mountains. I lived there with the natives for 1,5 months, there was no electricity, no phone lines, no technology whatsoever, we lived in small wood houses, had to cut wood, and the natives hunted, we helped with smaller things.
I think that was as close as it can be to the fantasy world of Guild Wars. I always see the Shiverpeak maps as something familiar, a place I could fit in, even if only for a short time 🙂 Also, the natives (the mansi) had a tiny bit similar ideas of the world around them, they have spirits to guide and protect them etc. It was a really “norny” experience!

If I would win, I’d like to have an M sized T-Shirt.
    Thank you!

The home instance at Rata Sum. Especially at night, it becomes one of my favourite places to hang out. I feel at peace looking at that night starry sky, as I can’t look at the real sky and see that many stars because i live in a city.
It just makes me feel really humble and in awe, thinking about the far away galaxies and what could be out there. Having a fascination with the stars, planets and galaxies, this is my favourite place out of all in Tyria.

Pockmark Roughs, I remember it as the Pockmark Flats from GW1. This crater was its own map zone. It was a show of just how far the Charr were willing to go in the war, and just how far the Ascalonians had fallen.

Yes there were other searing crystals, but this was and still is the biggest. Even 250 years later the crater is massive. And aside from those few stubborn trees and bushes, only a small layer of grass grows on the magically burned rocks left behind.

This screenshot makes me appreciate the work that the team put into developing the world. It shows me how much detail they poured into the game that even the night sky is gorgeous.

Separate from that, it makes me think of a quote, “We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers.”

I Read all the books before buying GW 2, mostly because It was cheaper than getting a better computer. When I finally got to play I hit up everything I know from GW1. there’s pock mark fields, where my ranger spent an entire day getting lost. there’s old LA lions. and so on. After hitting Old ascalon I though maybe I should grind a bit. Exploring sucks when you die every turn.

A little later I found Killeens monument. well it really hit me that I’ve been playing wrong. I had been looking for everything I already knew and was looking at everything with nostalgia goggles. I mean my ranger was and still uses his black widow pet. theifs build is just a copy of my shadow stepping ninja. warrior is a carbon copy of my old warrior, name hair color and style down to the fiery dragon sword. It is the turning point where I decided to stop treating this game as guild wars hd and its own separate game. its a whole new world and I gotta find it.

This was taken in Ember Bay, one of the better spots we could capture the lighting the best without anything in the background (other than that pesky bird). This was also on my birthday so we went around different areas taking pics, including snaps as quaggans! ( ) Since we took these pics in wvw some people were not tooOOOooOo kind to quaggan.

The Godslost Swamp is one of, if not my most favorite areas on Tyria. Aesthetically I find it amazing and really enjoy the ambiance, and come here to take many of my screen shots for characters. It really is significant to me since it was my first real encounter with world bosses, and players coming together in such large numbers. It really got me hooked on the game with how things like could organically happen when I’m just casually passing by, and that is why I felt the only justification for this zone would be an awesome combat screen shot with the Shadow Behemoth itself. 🙂

    1. Oh also 2x or 3x, which ever is available as a shirt size.

“The freezing conditions would chill any to their bones within minutes, only the warmth of campfires could save us from the elementals. The giant snowflakes looked so trusting and safe until they betrayed us, disappearing beneath our feet without warning. The presents were no better, they promised delight but the only gift they gave was a one-way ticket to the empty void below. And don’t get me started of the “snowballs”, boulders in disguised they were, crushing anyone foolish enough to stand in their way.

All that trouble, all that torment and for what? I’ll tell you what! For the amusement of charr-sized ginger-breadmen entertainment! They laughed and danced at our misery with their liquorice smiles and those lifeless gummy eyes” – The Purples Laughter’s journal entry on the Winter Wonderland.

If I get picked, I’d like medium T-shirt for me please!

This is a room that we, ourselves made, as a guild, everyone worked together to build something like this and it really hits my heartstrings. It means to me how tight of a community gw2 has, how so many different people from so many walks of life come together and have a good laugh together and help eachother everyday. I have to thank Anet for providing us with the oppurtunity to express ourselves as a community and to the many friends I’ve made along the way.

One of the prettiest palces on Tyria i think.
It’s in the Bloodtide Coast… Quite hard to find and get to.
We got the map instanced to ourselves and were waiting for Triple Trouble to spawn so we could get world first, back in the days. With the long waiting times, the guild was playing hide and seek and the place was shown to me. I’ve probably seen all nooks and crannies in Bloodtide Coast because of then.
Ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan of exploring Tyria while…. “thinking outside of the box”.
Sadly, the guild is no more, but I trek along…

Wintersday was fast approaching, and the Crown Pavilion was abuzz with life and vigor. A gentle breeze blew beneath the wings of the great bird of the Pavilion, its glass wings shimmering despite a few layers of snow and frost muting out every panel’s specularity. Laughter and joy echoed throughout the exuberant Pavilion, a far cry from the screaming and chaos which had occurred in the very same spot so long ago. The Great Collapse was now but a dreamlike memory, a bad thing which was now all but forgotten, especially under the vast glimmering, sheltering wings above. Now, children play in this once desolate area, orphans receive gifts from kind strangers, and people from all across Tyria come party and smack snowballs at each other.
Even some charr come and participate, often desiring to empty the celebratory kegs of Divinity’s Reach. Indeed, they drink inhuman amounts and truly earn the title of festive imbiber – one would do well not to try and pry a happy, drunken, singing charr off a giant quaggan plush without a few tranquilizer shots in hand.

This is a screen of me paying respect to Gwen Thackeray in Ebonhawk. I chose this one because it reminds me of everything i’ve played in GW1, since you met her as a child in pre Ascalon, until you fight at her side in the last expansion, Eye of the Nord. GW1 is still the game that i have most enjoyed, and this was a sort of a tribute to it.
If i win, the shirts should be size XXL or XXXL if you have xD

After I played alot of GW1 my first moment in GW2 I remember was when I chose my Charr as my first Char and doing Exploration in Ashfurt. The first time I saw the wall of Ascalon and then the Statue of Baltahzar took me right back to the time I played GW1 Prophecies. It was so awesom to see the old Settings in GW2 again.

Exploring the Gilded Hollow using oakheart reach led to some amazing views- from the very top of dragons stand to a desert over come with thorns. This spot on top of the mine showed a very sudden transition of desert to overgrown maguuma jungle- the start of our guild hall. Being so high up and seeing what had been put in place even though there was no guarentee people would even make it up this far to see it- just drove home how many good memories and good times I’ve had with this game 😀

This is a screenshot I took of an island found in Ventry Bay, Caledon Forest. I’ve used it as my desktop wallpaper ever since.
When I started playing Guild Wars and entered Ascalon in the Prophecies campaign, I was so impressed with how beautiful and peaceful everything was. This place/screenshot reminds me of that time and how I love Guild Wars (2) and its lore.

This place…I cannot explain the feels when I found this myself while exploring every map to the details…I was amazed how such a little place on a map can make a person happier.I’ve felt something I’ve never felt before, from randomly running across the map to bumping into this beautiful scenery that just left me breathless.Instantly I had to show it to all of my friends since it was so cool and they actually agreed with me.Even tho Anya claimed it as her garden, I just use it as a chill spot to relax and listen to GWs amazing soundtrack and just…listen.Think.Imagine.Even tho the garden has no name, I like to call it the Mind Keepers Grove.

If I am to win, my shirt size is M. Thank you!

The end of Urban Battleground fractal. This place has signifigant meaning to me because it’s the first thing I did with my now boyfriend. I was rather new to the game (maybe a month into playing) and trying to tackle the fractal on my own (was my first fractal too). I got all the way to the last boss (not without some struggle) and just couldn’t kill the final boss. So I complained in my guild and he offered his help. It’s pretty much what kicked off our talking and getting to know each other. Though it would be months before we REALLY got to know each other and got together.

    4x is my shirt size.

    The Grove
Deep in the roots of the grove is where I feel most at home in Tyria. The crystalline water, the quiet sounds, and the soothing protection of the mother tree overhead, all contribute to a warm and safe feeling that always brings me back no matter how far I roam, and I will always protect her.

The silverwastes is my favourite map and I spend so much time there that there’s a bit of a joke in my guild to be shocked if I’m NOT in there. The ambiance is really nice and pleasant. The fact that this map also had the surprise teaser for Heart of Thorns, as well as the entry point to said expansion, just makes it so much more special.

I simply love Tarir. How the city is been thinked and the design are wonderful, with gold and colored glasses and it’s been one of my favourite HoT story part (especially done by Silvary) and the moment I’ve shared played with my guild Roleplaying or just for events had been some of the best GW2 of this last years. Plus, Assault to Tarir is a great event that need strong collaboration between players and gives a lot in return (in loot and in fun).

I belive this picture emphasizes best my whole journey through Tyria so far. Sitting on top of the exact place where it all started, this picture captures a place that gives me both nostalgia and goosebumps each time I pass through. Snowlord’s Gate is such an iconic location for each norn, and for me: The Four Spirit’s Statues on the mountain, the gate to Hoelbrak, a small forest and the stairs leading up to the victory place against Issomir. Everything surrounds and protects a small but cozy homstead that gives a warm welcome to each and every traveler passing by…

Kaettsa works hard. Fighting off the dead to keep her beloved fort of First Haven safe has always been her job, but she loves it ever since… With her short bow, which never left her side since she inherited from her father who passed away two years ago, she is the best undead sniper around.
And she’s been so happy the last few days, as she found someone with whom she can share the thrill of the fight but also have a good laugh over a beer or two (btw. the best beer around Kryta… just saying). Tonight, she is secretly meeting him at her most favorite place in the world… She already had everything set up when she heard rustling in the grass from behind her. With her instincs, she jumped quickly to her feet…

There really couldn’t be anything more nostalgic for me when it comes to Guild Wars. Owning and building your own hall was something my old guild took so much pride in, it was/is our home from home bringing together all of us in that sense despite the fact we may be physically sitting thousands of miles apart.

To be honest, I could have picked any map, taken a pic and used it for this contest. Draconis Mons just happens to be a really beautiful example of all the things that keep me playing GW2. The gorgeous environments in every single map they create, the story and the worldbuilding. Yes, there have been problems with delivery of story in the past but they’ve definitely improved on it and the scope and world has always been there. And the environmental storytelling in the new map is great. From overheard conversations to old recordings to an old tomb to an entire lore filled backpack collection.

This particular spot in Gendarran field fills me with so many fuzzy feelings. I know, random, right?
It all goes back to when I started playing. Scarlet had just attacked Lion’s arch a couple of days after I started playing, and my friends were deciding on a new place to set up a little guild base to discuss RP events, and how the miasma could tie in.
It’s also where they decided that my character was going to be introduced. Aliuh got to make her debut (being attacked by a level 50 bat as a level 20, not the most graceful entrance) as the weirdo comic relief of the guild, and our token Asura. And that is where, essentially, I gained a family.
Three years later, our guild is still going strong. But these little tents will always feel like a little home to me.

Size M or L t-shirt for me if possible. Keep up the great work, guys!

My favorite character; my revenant, peering out over Lion’s Arch as dusk falls. Ever since Lion’s Arch was redone, it has been the most breathtaking city. The lighting, the architecture, the flora, the people – even the relaxed posture of my revenant makes this screenshot so nostalgic.

I started playing GW2 during Festival fo the Four Winds. Labyrinthine Cliffs was such a beautiful place and I loved it the moment I set my foot in there. When the Zephyrites crashed it didn’t really bother me though, it was an event in a game I barely started playing. But progressing though Season 2 made me realise how big tragedy it was and that probably I’ll never return to the Cliffs. So much time passed and I still can’t get over it. I hope maybe one day ANet will decide to bring Zephyrites back, allow us, the players, to help them rebuild their ships and give hope with the Festival. But for now, it only remains for me to sing:
    “Alas, alas, alas, alas.
    Alas and so we go.
We fly on high into the sky.
    And cry alas alas…”

Hi! First of all, thanks for the contest! I find the idea of a screenshot contest really amusing.
That’s Jaka Itzel village: my favorite place in all Tyria. I’m always there when I want to relax and play for fun. I like everything about it, the music is so catchy and happy, the place is so quiet and Itzel are so cool! In the middle of chaos and destruction there’s a little village over the trees, this concept reassures me, a tiny sanctuary of peace for me in the jungle.
    T-shirt size S, thanks!

  22. Thank you for hosting this contest. I’ve been playing guild wars since the first days of the first one. Pre-searing is still the place I think about when trying to describe the place I want to be. In GW2 there are beautiful places too, and though I still love Ascalon and its colors, I must say its kryta and some areas of queensdale that make my eyes fly! The windmills and the flowered fortresses have witnessed a lot of adventuring from me and my friend. The only place I would name, and I wish to see in game so much, is cantha. Beautiful.

    If chosen I would loveee a L gw2 shirt 🙂

I love taking scenery screenshots and took this one just before attempting the Chalice of Tears jumping puzzle in Ember Bay. Having spent so much time in lava prior to this, I thought the blazing orange sheet of colour here was a testament to the challenge this map was for me. The daunting heights of the volcano and the skulls designed into them as if they are waiting for my next attempt, I still haven’t managed to complete that jumping puzzle… 😉

Everything has a beginning and an end. It’s been a long time since I walked away from my humble alley in homeland Kryta. Many memories pass by upon my gaze when I turn to the distant horizon. I’ve won, I’ve fought and I’ve lost. Now, I find myself trapped into the mists, where I seek redemption where I seek what I’ve lost.
For, I’ve become what I sought to destroy. Lurking in the dark I stalk my prey and without remorse I strike my foes ferociously. Fast, clean…I’ve done harvesting of souls my daily deed.
If you ever come to the mists, never turn your back on me, for I a daredevil, I won’t give quarter or spare mercy.
Everything has a beginning and an end.

This is from the first time I have seriously ventured into the Mists on a WvW map. Knowing little about what’s ahead of me, I was wandering around, when I found a great castle, which turned out to be the one and only Stonemist Castle. After taking my time exploring the monument, I reached the vista on the top. I peered into the distance, and I was taken aback as I glanced the banners. A pink quaggan ruled the castle. And ruling this caslte, I was guessing, means ruling the Mists… and ruling the Mists… it got me thinking. If a pink quaggan could rule the world…

This graveyard (however morbid it might sound) is one of my favorite locations in the game. It’s this place that made me realise how much detail the developers have put into the game, so much that every single grave has an inscription, which just made me want to explore the world even more. Also it reminds me of when my friend still played this game since we had a great time laughing with some of the inscriptions on the stones when we first discovered this place.

Everyone knows and remembers the Memorial Quadrant, the road of statues in the Black Citadel dedicated to the greatest charr heroes and I really like to think that every charr may find those statues inspiring. That said, one spot that I like even more without leaving the Black Citadel is the Plaza of Remembrance, a large memorial of warband fallen in the line of duty. Charrs do value the concept of teamwork and I think that this memorial is a really nice way of showing it.

I still love this screenshot (one in a serie)… I took it when I needed an amazing image for my own website. In this particular one my necro is actually shocked about the amount of time that has passed since it was taken, over two years ago already :D. Shot in Garri, Citadel in the background and she was using an Omnomberry Ghost (I still love it’s effect). A few months later Heart of Thorns came out and it took a while before I was able to visit the same spot again (and I had missed it for sure).

There is short story about my Sylvari and the Ancient Druid:

The slender, green-eyed Sylvari jumped through the fallen bough. Behind her was striding a proud creature, an Ancient Druid. The Sylvari sighed and stared with admiration for the landscape. The remains of an ancient tree in the bottom of a valley and a majestic waterfall in front of them. Druid seemed to absorb the energy from the surrounding plant.
“We can’t allow them to destroy the jungle. Never…” She sighed, putting her swords on the nearby rock.
“You and I,” said the astral being, “we are so similar.”
“I feel that it is coming.”
Moments later the earth shook, and the birds rose over the crowns of trees.
    The Mordremoth was awake.

    Mordremoth’s call

    “Pact Airships were destroyed
    Storm, deep inside me
    The night is falling
    I cannot let them see
    I close my eyes
    Between time and space
    I hear his call
The drops are falling down my back
They took me to the land of dead trees
The lighted sky looks just like home
    My heart hurts
I want to fly like a fluff to The Grove
    Pale Tree protect me
Golden birds flew over my head”

This particular image is from the Benthic Kelp Beds in Mount Maelstrom. I personally feel that GW2 has some of the most beautiful, yet underutilized, water areas. I hope one day we’ll be able to encounter a magnificent, yet challenging, PVE boss fight under the sea 🙂
